Istanbul Airport

Welcome to Istanbul Airport (IST),

Opened in 2018 and located in the Arnavutköy district on the European side of Istanbul, IST is Turkey's largest airport and a major global hub connecting continents. Its modern design and vast size can be impressive, but also a bit daunting for first-time visitors. This guide is here to help you navigate it smoothly.

Your Guide to Navigating Turkey's Main International Hub

Flights & Airlines IST serves as the main base for Turkish Airlines and hosts a vast number of other international and domestic carriers. You can find flights to hundreds of destinations worldwide from here.

Terminal Information Currently, IST operates with one very large, integrated terminal building handling both domestic and international flights under one roof. It's divided into different piers (A, B, D, F for International, G for Domestic). Pay attention to signs and allow plenty of time to get to your gate.

Getting To and From IST Airport

You have several options to reach the city center or other areas:

  • Havaist Buses: These comfortable shuttle buses offer direct routes to many key locations like Taksim, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy, Bakırköy, and more. You can pay using Istanbulkart or credit card. Schedules and routes are available on the Havaist website.
  • Metro (M11 Line): The M11 metro line provides a fast connection between the airport and Kağıthane station (offering connections to other lines like M7) and Gayrettepe (connecting to the M2 Yenikapı-Hacıosman line, serving Taksim and Şişli). This is often the quickest way to avoid traffic.
  • IETT Public Buses: Several public bus lines connect IST to various parts of the city. They are generally cheaper but can be slower and make more stops.
  • Taxi / Rideshare: Taxis are readily available 24/7. Ensure the meter is running. Ride-sharing apps also operate in Istanbul. Journeys to central areas can take 45-90 minutes depending heavily on traffic.
  • Private Transfers: You can pre-book private or shared shuttle services for a fixed price.
  • Car Rental: Major international and local car rental companies have desks at the airport.

Airport Services & Facilities

IST is well-equipped with passenger services:

  • Lounges: Numerous airline lounges (like Turkish Airlines' famous lounges) and several independent pay-per-use lounges.
  • Shopping: A large Duty-Free area, plus numerous shops selling Turkish goods, fashion, electronics, and more.
  • Food & Drink: A wide variety of cafes, fast-food outlets, and restaurants catering to different tastes and budgets.
  • Accommodation: YOTELAIR Istanbul Airport offers landside and airside hotel rooms directly within the terminal. Other hotels are located a short drive away.
  • Other Services: Currency exchange offices, ATMs, pharmacies, prayer rooms, free Wi-Fi (usually for a limited time, registration required), luggage storage, and information desks.

Practical Tips

  • Allow Extra Time: IST is huge. Factor in walking time between check-in, security, immigration, and your gate. Arrive well in advance of your flight (3 hours for international, 2 hours for domestic is recommended).
  • Check Flight Info: Use the flight information screens frequently as gate assignments can change.
  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: You'll likely be doing a fair bit of walking!
